World Autism Acceptance Month is a time to reflect, learn and act. For us at Your Voice Count Advocacy service, it’s also a chance to reaffirm our commitment to supporting autistic people through independent advocacy.
Autistic people are more likely to face barriers in healthcare, education, housing, and social care. Sometimes their communication style or support needs are misunderstood. Sometimes they’re left out of conversations about their own lives.
Advocacy changes that.
We work alongside autistic people to:
Help them understand their rights and options
Support them to express their views in meetings
Challenge when they’re being treated unfairly
Make sure decisions reflect what they want.
We also work with professionals and families - explaining the importance of reasonable adjustments, accessible information, and the space to process and respond.
True advocacy means being led by the person. That might mean using pictures, allowing time, or checking back again when things are clearer.
It’s not just about being in the room. It’s about people actually listening.
This month let’s keep listening. Let’s keep learning. And let’s keep pushing for a world where autistic people are respected and understood - every day of the year.
