Sign Language Week 2025
Embracing Inclusivity: Sign Language Week 2025 - Blog by Your Voice Counts Head of Advocacy Sharon de Jesús
During Sign Language Week 2025, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate and promote British Sign Language (BSL). Organised by the British Deaf Association (BDA), this annual event runs from 17th to 23rd March and aims to raise awareness about the languages and cultures of the Deaf community.
This year's theme, "With sign language and culture - we prosper," emphasises the importance of sign language and Deaf culture in enriching our society. By embracing and promoting BSL, we can foster a more inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
One significant milestone to celebrate is the development of a GCSE in British Sign Language, set to be taught in schools by September 2025. This initiative represents a monumental step towards inclusivity in education, providing both Deaf and hearing students the chance to learn BSL formally.
We encourage everyone to participate in Sign Language Week 2025 by learning BSL, attending events, and sharing information to raise awareness. Together, we can promote inclusivity and ensure that the voices of the Deaf community are heard and valued.
