Ramadan - guest blog from a Your Voice Counts volunteer

One of our volunteers has been celebrating Ramadan and asked us to share some information about her experiences in this guest blog. Eid Mubarak to all of our friends and colleagues who are celebrating.

What is Ramadan about?

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims where we fast from before sunrise till sunset and not having any food or drink till sunset. This holy month is also important because it’s a time where we take into consideration the people who are less fortunate and don’t have food or drink in their everyday lives.

Also Ramadan, is a time of worship and being closer to god and spiritual cleansing. Also during Ramadan we feel much more healthier.

Why do people fast during Ramadan?

  • Show their thanks to God and reflect on the teachings of the Qur'an and its importance for believers.

  • Devote themselves to their faith.

  • Teach self-discipline.

  • Remind themselves of the suffering of the poor.

  • Strengthen family and community ties.

What is a typical day like during Ramadan?

Wake up before sunrise, have something to eat before your fasting commences after sunrise, pray, give to charity if you’re able, do normal daily activities like as if it’s not Ramadan just no eating or drinking

How can I share Ramadan with my community, even if they’re not Muslim?

Sharing food with local community and sharing about what Ramadan is.

Does Ramadan have any impact on volunteering or working?

It doesn’t really impact it as much, you just do what you do as normal. My family are working just like any other day it just a normal day tbh nothing changes just no eating or drinking.

How does it make you feel?

I feel happy and good about myself.
