Mencap’s Winterbourne View campaign
It’s now been ten years since the Winterbourne View scandal that uncovered the abuse of people with learning disabilities and autism at a residential care facility near Bristol. At the time, the Government made a commitment to move away from providing care through inpatient facilities like this in favour of community-based support. However, the learning disability charity Mencap estimates that 2000 people with learning disabilities and autism are still receiving care in this sort of setting and they have launched a campaign urging the Government to publish an action plan setting out how improvements are going to be made.
