Celebrating Learning Disability Week 2021
We are a local charity that helps people with learning disabilities and autistic people to be connected and to speak up for what they want and need. To mark Learning Disability Week 2021 (#LDWeek2021), we have arranged activities to celebrate the achievements of the people we work with and provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autistic people to join in with this year’s Learning Disability Week arts and creativity theme.
Cooking with confidence sessions, face to face groups and a creative crew online session are just some of the hands-on events that will encourage people to express themselves through new activities while artwork from recent art and poetry lived experience groups will be available to enjoy online.
Gateshead Peer Enablers have also created a short film about face mask exemption which we will be sharing throughout the week (available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGR8s-hr0GU). They felt it was important to address the assumptions people have when some are exempt from wearing a mask due to their hidden disabilities.
A special Picnic in the Park event organised by the Speaking Up Together self-advocacy group will also follow, taking place on Wednesday 23 June in Saltwell Park in Gateshead for people with learning disabilities and their friends and families.
People with lived experience of learning disabilities and autism including the Co-Chair of the Your Voice Counts Board will also be supporting learning disability nurses at roadshow events at the QE hospital.
