What is Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training?
Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is named after Oliver McGowan whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training about the needs of autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
Staff training in learning disability and autism is now a legal requirement for Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated services providers, and Oliver McGowan Training is the government's preferred model.

Which training courses are available?
Tier 1 is a one-hour online training course that gives a general awareness of autism and learning disabilities for staff who may not work directly with people with learning disabilities and autistic people but who need to be aware of their needs.
Tier 2 is an in-person session for staff who are likely to engage with people with learning disabilities or autistic people as part of their work (e.g. people in public/patient facing roles).

“I work at Your Voice Counts as Commissioning Officer for the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board in South Tyneside. I play a lead role in the delivery of Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in the region. I deliver training to health and social care professionals and offer my ideas about accessible ways to engage with people with learning disabilities. I like that my lived experience is valued and that I have been able to have work experience like this. The things I do feel quite important and will make people’s lives better.”
