"A little understanding goes a long way"
Connor and Anthony from our team have stammers and have shared their experiences to mark International Stammering Awareness Day #ISAD2024
“I have stammered all my life, and it has affected my confidence in social situations. This is due to people’s attitude, as when I was younger many people would talk over or dismiss me when I spoke because of their impatience. This would make me feel like I did not have a voice but over the years I’ve accepted my stammer and have gained confidence to do a lot more things. As my confidence got better, I don’t stammer/stutter as much now.” Anthony
“Living with a stammer has shaped my life in ways both challenging and profound. As a child, I often felt isolated, struggling to find my words while my peers spoke freely. School presentations were a nightmare, and even simple conversations felt like battles I rarely won. Over time, I found techniques that helped—like breathing exercises and taking my time. Adulthood brought new hurdles: job interviews, social gatherings, and even phone calls could feel daunting. But I've learned to advocate for myself, explaining my stammer and asking for patience. For those speaking with someone who stammers, the best support you can give is to listen patiently, maintain eye contact, and resist the urge to finish our sentences. A little understanding goes a long way.” Connor
