Ann, the YVC Volunteer Coordinator
As a Volunteer Coordinator, my days vary hugely. Some days I can have a busy admin day where I spend the day working from home catching up on emails, taking part in online meetings and making phone calls to potential volunteers. Other days I can be out meeting volunteers in person, attending recruitment fairs and taking part in networking events - my job is very varied which is all part of the fun!
This month, I spoke to seven people interested in volunteering - I usually receive an email first then follow up with a phone call to chat about their motivation to volunteer, their skills and experience. If this goes well, I invite the potential volunteer to a taster session before confirming if they want to go ahead.
A day in my life!
8:00am – I start my shift at home, answering emails and planning for the day. We're in the middle of setting up our advocacy internship programme at the moment, so I have lots of emails about this and calendar appointments for interviews with potential interns to confirm.
9:20am – I travel by car from North Tyneside through the Tyne Tunnel to meet a potential volunteer for a taster session at our Jarrow drop-in group. Lisa is a Law student at Sunderland University and is looking for a placement with us.
10:00am – 11:00am – I introduced Lisa to everyone and talk more about volunteering at YVC. Lisa was able to meet a variety of staff at the drop-in including our Community Connectors, Financial Support and Health and Wellbeing teams. Whilst Lisa was chatting to people, I spoke to other volunteers to see if they were doing ok and needed anything from me. I also helped a volunteer with his online DBS application.
It was a busy session, but Lisa did very well chatting to everyone and even went on a space ship ride with Derek! At the end of the session, we both agreed Lisa would be a great fit for our drop-in supporter volunteer role.
11:30am – 12:30pm - I drive over to Newcastle College to attend a careers fair, stopping off for a sandwich and coffee on the way.
12:30pm - 3:30pm - I host a stall at the careers fair, talking to students about our volunteering opportunities. Careers and jobs fairs are always a fantastic way of recruiting new volunteers and are also a great way for me to get ideas and insight into the sort of things potential volunteers are looking for from a placement.
3:30pm - 4:15pm - I drive home in time to join an online catch up with my colleague Ady from our Community Connector team. We're confirming the arrangements for a potential volunteer to come along for a taster session at our Boldon drop-in. I make a note to speak to our Advocacy team tomorrow about arranging a visit for a potential advocacy volunteer at a care home.
5:00pm - I have a quick scan through my emails before finishing for today - another busy day at YVC done and dusted!
